Broadside

Architects: Strom Architects

Landscape Designer: McWilliam Studio

Location: Cheshire, United Kingdom

This expansive countryside home replaces an existing building on a secluded site just outside Alderley Edge, near Manchester. Despite being situated within the Green Belt and considerably larger than the original house, Broadside secured planning permission thanks to its outstanding architectural quality - praised by the local authority as “an excellent contemporary design”.

Designed as a series of horizontal planes stepping with the terrain, the house rests on a podium that addresses the sloping topography while concealing enclosed parking and a multifunctional party space. A sculptural helical staircase connects this lower level to the main living quarters above. Floor-to-ceiling glazing wraps around the party space, revealing curated views of both the supercar collection and an indoor swimming pool.

Above, the main living spaces unfold across two long wings. One is dedicated to everyday life and socialising - cantilevered dramatically over the podium - while the other houses a generous spa suite with a 15-metre pool, sauna, steam room and gym. The top floor accommodates bedrooms and a home office, culminating in the master suite which extends 9 metres beyond the floor below, floating above the landscape.

Landscape design played an integral role in the project. From the podium’s edge, the terrain transitions into soft wildflower meadows, native planting and a large ecological pond, enhancing biodiversity across the site. Carefully framed views and a stepped path across the water further connect the house to its surroundings.
